LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network with over 400 million users in over 200 countries across the world (LinkedIn Corporation 2015). The social network allows individuals to create a professional profile and connect with other peers, workers and employers. Users have the ability to seek job opportunities and connect with professionals. Employers can post jobs and use the platform as a search engine. Users are able to post and share personal content and experience as well as interesting articles and images they may be interested in.
The social networking platform was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly and Jean-Luc Vaillant (LinkedIn Corporation 2015). LinkedIn officially launched on May 5th, 2003. In LinkedIn’s first month of operation over 4,500 members joined the network (2015). Since then it has exponentially developed and become a significant tool in the corporate business world. Every second two new professionals are signing up for a LinkedIn membership (Slutsky 2015). LinkedIn outlines their mission statement and goals on the social networking platform.
“Our mission is simple: To create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. When you join LinkedIn, you get access to people, jobs, news, updates, and insights that help you be great at what you do,” (LinkedIn Corporation 2015).
LinkedIn continues to develop and grow as numerous users are infatuated with the idea of professional networking (Winston 2015). Since its birth in 2003, LinkedIn has attracted numerous graduate students and alumni. Winston argues, “..social-media sites continue to expand, evolve, and change the ways people communicate with one another,” (2015). LinkedIn has enabled inter-societal connections across the globe. LinkedIn continues to exponentially develop with over 20 million members utilizing the networking platform.
